School board sees variety of action

During the Fulton County Board of Education's Sept. 13 meeting, the board covered a variety of topics.

Students and staff from the Fulton County 4-H program presented an overview of the educational programs and activities that 4-H offers Fulton students.

The following students, employees, and schools were recognized by the Board of Education: Boys and Girls State.

At this year's session of Boys State, Roswell High student Alex Gill was elected as governor and Centennial High student James Gibson was elected lieutenant governor. Milton High student John Schippert and Evan Wilson from Roswell High were named as Georgia's two senators to Boys Nation, conducted this summer in Washington, D.C.

At Boys Nation, Wilson was elected president. The two senators to Girls Nation also are from Fulton Katrina Marshall, Roswell High, and Dana Worley, Milton High. The board also presented Fulton County residents Ramon and Rosanna Bassett with a certificate of appreciation for their work in coordinating the Boys State program with the American Legion.

For the second consecutive year, Fulton County has been named one of the 100 Best Communities in the Nation for music education. Harry Bergwall, a member of the American Music Conference, presented a plaque to music coordinator Jay Wucher in recognition of the honor.

A program in place at Creekside High called Project Wisdom received a National School of Character Promising Practices Award. Accepting the board's congratulations were Principal Steve Schyck, assistant Principal Jeff Hughes, and counselor Alan Hogan.

For the fifth consecutive year, the budget department received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association.

Department team members are Jean Sina, Marrietta Jackson-Carter, Jennifer Banks, Celia Briggs, Wilhelmina Fowlkes and Venice Hall.

Mountain Park Elementary teacher Katie Searcy was one of 25 educators nationally selected to participate in the NASA Educational Workshop in July. Searcy met with NASA scientists, engineers and technicians and learned ways to integrate the national standards in mathematics, science, geography and technology.

The board received an update on the 1999-2001 technology services plan.

Attendance zones for the new high school opening on Parsons Road received approval. The school, opening in 2002-2003, relieves overcrowding at Chattahoochee and Milton high schools.

The board received an update on the reapportionment process currently under discussion by the Georgia General Assembly.

Requests for a telecommunications lease at Haynes Bridge Middle and utility easement relocation at Brookview Elementary received approval.

The Capital Programs Board Action Report, including the Preston Ridge high school site, Paul D. West Middle School replacement site, and needs assessment items at Tri-Cities and Banneker school clusters, was approved, along with the monthly purchasing report.
