Fairburn Christian Arts Alliance to present 'Godspell'

The recently formed Fairburn Christian Arts Alliance will present its first production, "Godspell," Oct. 11-13 and Oct. 18-20, with all proceeds going to two local charities.

Shows run Thursday through Saturday and performances start at 8 p.m. at the Fairburn United Methodist Church, 5 Washington St., Fairburn. Tickets are $5.

The charities selected are Hope House, a children's respite hospice, and the Fairburn Area Churches' Emergency Food Bank.

Hope House is under the sponsorship of the Southwest Christian Hospice and, in March 1996, began providing home respite care for medically fragile children suffering from severe disabilities and progressive life-threatening diseases.

"The Hope House respite program depends solely on the generous support of individuals, foundations, businesses, churches and civic groups to provide services at no cost to patients and families," a spokesman said. "Services are provided without regard to race, creed or economic status."

The Fairburn Area Churches' Emergency Food Bank provides food to Fairburn area residents who are in need of food because of family crises such as loss of job or eviction. Applicants must be referred from one of the eight participating churches who provide food and food vouchers. Applicants are given enough food to last each person about four days and are given vouchers to purchase perishable items not stocked at the food bank.

"These charities were selected because they are Christian-based organizations which impact the South Fulton area and they both have an immediate need for funding," a spokesman said. "The show has a goal of raising $3,000 to be split between the two organizations."

Kelly Davenport, technical director, said of the production, "The show is accomplishing two goals: using the arts to spread the word of Christ and contributing to two important organizations in our community."

Fund-raising activities to cover production costs are also scheduled. A spaghetti supper at the Fairburn United Methodist Church is planned Saturday, Sept. 29, from 6:45-7:45 p.m. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased by phone, 770-252-2036.

A yard sale will be at 81 East Broad St., Fairburn, Saturday, Oct., 6 with proceeds going to production expenses.

The Fairburn Christian Arts Alliance was formed in the spring of this year and includes the First Christian Church in Fairburn, Fairburn United Methodist Church and the First Baptist Church of Fairburn.

In addition, the cast of "Godspell" includes individuals from New Hope Baptist in Fayetteville, Peachtree City Christian in Peachtree City, and Lithia Springs First Baptist Church in Douglas County.
