Fairburn, county renegotiating fire contract By JOHN

Fairburn's leaders may face a new challenge during budget discussions next year. Early last week, Fairburn received a letter from the Fulton County Fire Department indicating the county's desire to take a look at the contract it has with Fairburn. According to Fairburn Fire Chief Walt Brown, county officials now provide the manpower for Fairburn's Fire Department, while the city is responsible for the equipment, maintenance and station. "They say we're not paying our fair share," Brown said. Fulton County has similar contracts with Palmetto and Alpharetta and has also indicated it wants to take another look at those contracts next year. Brown said Fulton County's new fire chief, I. David Daniels, decided to wait until next year to get into the meat of contract discussions, since many of the municipalities have already completed their budgets this year. Brown is not sure what the repercussions could be, but he wanted the City Council to know what is occurring. "He said there's not another beast on the planet like Fairburn," Brown said. In the letter, Daniels said he would like to begin discussions with the city in early 2002 and have an agreement completed by Aug. 1 with any changes starting Jan. 1, 2003.
