South Fulton Chamber going solo

The South Fulton Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has voted unanimously to operate as an independent Chamber of Commerce and redefine its nine-year relationship with the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.

The South Fulton Chamber's decision to operate independently comes in response to South Fulton's recent phenomenal growth and growth potential, as well as the chamber's desire to concentrate on issues specific to South Fulton businesses.

A transition team has been put into place to determine the time line for this transition and its conditions. The South Fulton Chamber Board will form new committee structures to facilitate the transition and it will begin looking at new programs aimed at offering greater benefit to its membership.

"The Metro Atlanta Chamber has been as good a partner as we could ever have hoped for," said South Fulton Chamber Chairman Sheila Crews. "They have been a terrific supporter of this area and of our programs and our relationship with them is and will continue to be wonderful. However, we feel that now is a good time to become independent again and move forward with programs tailored to the specific needs of the South Fulton business community."

Metro Atlanta Chamber President Sam Williams echoed those sentiments.

"We support their desire to become independent again and will now begin the process of redefining our affiliation with the South Fulton Chamber. Although our relationship will change, we look forward to a future of partnership and cooperation as both organizations strive to serve their memberships and our metro community."

Incoming chairman for 2002, Myrna White, added, "We will continue to partner with the Metro Chamber on projects that impact this area because as Atlanta metro has grown, more and more business is being done on a regional basis. But with the booming growth of residential, commercial and other businesses in South Fulton, the community is feeling the need to have its own dedicated chamber of commerce."

The South Fulton Chamber Board will form new committee structures to facilitate the transition and it will begin looking at new programs aimed at offering greater benefit to its membership.

"It's been an exciting time to chair this chamber and I foresee an outstanding future for it," said Crews, whose term of office will end at the conclusion of the annual dinner meeting Nov. 1.

"I want to wish the entire Board of Directors and incoming chair Myrna White the best of luck during this exciting period, but I am really looking forward to the remainder of my time in office to get this project on its way," she said.
