Seabaugh Urges Delta to Reconsider Layoffs

In a letter released late last week, state Sen. Mitch Seabaugh, R-Sharpsburg, urged Delta Air Lines officials to reconsider layoff decisions since Congress has passed an aid package for the airline industry.

"I understand the uncertainty the industry is facing at this time, but with the industry now receiving emergency funding to aid your company, I feel the decision to lay off workers is premature and insensitive," Seabaugh says in the letter.

"Our government has quickly rushed in to help you with taxpayer money. It does not seem fair for Delta to respond by laying off workers that will only result in more taxpayer money being paid out in unemployment compensation," Seabaugh's letter said.

Seabaugh urged Delta to view its employment decisions not only from Wall Street's perspective, but to also consider Main Street's view. "As American people and American companies, this is a time for us to consider other Americans before we consider ourselves," Seabaugh said.

"With the aid that congress has now provided you, won't you please consider using some of that support to bridge your support for employees, our fellow Americans," Seabaugh also said in his letter.

In releasing the letter Seabaugh stated that many of his neighbors are Delta employees along with being taxpayers. "It just doesn't seem right that their tax dollars would go to help a company that just handed them a pink slip, does it?"
