Brooks has new councilman
By CAROLYN
CARY
Election in the town of Brooks will be a non-event. The current mayor, Bobby Butler, and Post 2 Councilman Jackie Carson qualified to run again in their respective posts. Post 1 is currently held by Caroline Smith, who declined to run again. Qualifying ended Sept. 14 with no one applying for the position. After Sept. 14 anyone applying to be on the ballot could do so by declaring to be a write-in candidate, posting a notice in the county legal organ, and bringing proper certification papers to the Elections Office. Carolyn Combs, Fayette County elections manager, said that Lewis Harper had placed an ad that appeared last Friday and was expected to bring in his certification by today. Harper has lived in Brooks for 11 years and is the deputy chief of the College Park Police Department. He has previously served on the Land Use Plan Committee for Brooks. Combs said because no one else qualified through the write-in procedure Harper was automatically elected. He will be installed at the January 2002 council meeting.
