Bus drivers collect money for firefighters

Shouts of "Fayette County bus drivers helping out the firefighters" rang out on every street corner around Fayetteville's Courthouse Square Friday as Fayette's school bus drivers collected donations for New York City's firefighters and their families.

Every car that passed through the Fayetteville square between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. was greeted by a bus driver with a bucket asking for donations. It did not take long for the community to fill the buckets with their generosity. The bus drivers raised more than $5,000.

"People are putting $5, $10, even $20 bills into the bucket. This is unbelievable," said Cyndee Haney, who drives bus 203.

Bus driver Virginia Couch had the idea to rally the drivers to help raise funds to assist those who had worked hard to save many lives during the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

"They [firefighters] are community servants and so are we. They have truly served their community and country well and we as bus drivers can do the same by getting out into our community and supporting them," said Couch.

Approximately 35 drivers answered Couch's call to help. To show their spirit, the drivers decorated two school buses with American flags and red, white and blue streamers and placed them around the square to help promote their efforts.

Proceeds raised were turned over to the Fayette County Fire Department. The money will be combined with the department's fund-raising efforts for the firefighters in New York City
