PTC Council keeps hands off any election changes

A Peachtree City councilman's suggestion to study a change in Peachtree City's municipal elections process was resoundingly rejected by his fellow council members at Thursday night's regular meeting.

Dan Tennant had proposed looking at how council members are elected. But Councilwoman Annie McMenamin said she wanted to drop the subject so no one would be confused before this November's election.

Council voted to end the discussion, thereby ending its only regular agenda item of the evening; the regular session of the meeting lasted just over 15 minutes. Council later met a while longer in executive session to discuss a personnel matter, but no official action was taken afterward.

Currently, the council seats are citywide and thus voters may vote for more than one candidate.

In many other Georgia municipalities, cities are broken up into districts so that voters from a certain district may only vote for candidates for that particular council seat.

Tennant suggested the process could be changed so council members don't declare for a certain seat, rather the top two vote getters in the election would be awarded the council seats.

But Mayor Bob Lenox noted that could leave a situation where one or both council members was elected without a majority vote from the electorate, particularly when a large number of candidates qualify for office.
