Donations sought for museum

Fayette County's first historic museum is well on its way to completion, according to city officials.

The construction schedule indicates that work on the exterior and interior facade at Holliday-Dorsey-Fife House will be completed by the end of this month. But in many respects, this means the job will have just begun for those serving as the advisory commission for the museum.

The 1855 Greek Revival home on West Lanier Avenue has long been a city landmark. The job of transforming the house into a working museum and tourism destination is the next step in the process.

Displays must be acquired and donations authenticated, although many items are already in the possession of the commission. The "Road to Tara" collection was purchased several years ago by the Downtown Development Authority and will occupy one of the rooms in the museum.

John Lynch, spokesman for the commission, has indicated that donations are currently being accepted from members of the community to be used for display purposes at the museum. The present plan is to utilize the various rooms in the house for different themes, including the history of Fayette County, the city of Fayetteville, the Civil War, the Holliday-Dorsey-Fife families, "Gone With The Wind" and Fayette County veterans.

Individuals with articles relevant to the museum can contact the Main Street office at City Hall in Fayetteville for further information. Holliday-Dorsey-Fife House donation forms are available through the Main Street office, or call Ann Woodall at 770-461-6029.
