Governor visits Fairburn to sell home program By JOHN THOMPSON
Gov. Roy Barnes came to South Fulton this weekend to introduce a new program for first-time home buyers. The governor appeared in Fairburn yesterday to talk about the Department of Community Affairs partnership to have more builders construct EarthCraft Houses. Earthcraft's materials are more durable and require less maintenance. The home also has additional health and safety measures that allows better indoor air quality. The home is also known for conserving energy and helps to prevent bugs, mold and pollutants. Most of all, it will save homeowners time, energy and money. Pam Sessions with the Greater Atlanta Homebuilders Association said the annual heating and cooling costs for the Earthcraft model home is $599. The department is making $435,000 available in down payment loans for first time home buyers that use the department's mortgage and down payment programs. The loans will be offered as zero percent-deferred repayment second mortgages for eligible buyers in subdivisions selected through a request for proposal process. One of the subdivisions selected is Fairburn Commons, which the governor visited yesterday.
