Residents press Edwards on power plant promise By JOHN THOMPSON
A South Fulton advocacy group is urging Commissioner Bill Edwards to ask for a more complete environmental study from Williams Companies. Williams wants to build a power plant on a 288-acre site on Peters Road, and has faced opposition in its efforts from several community groups. Safeguard South Metro President Mary Jo Paladino recently sent a letter to Edwards asking him to remember his promise. "On Aug. 7 at the meeting held by [state] Rep. Sharon Beaseley-Teague at the Burdette gym you told the crowd that you would request of Williams Co. the completion of an environmental impact statement to replace the previous self-serving environmental impact report," she wrote. In her letter, Paladino said her group realized that it takes approximately six months or longer to properly complete an environmental impact statement. Her concern is that residents have not heard whether the company is working on the project. "We are anxious to find out when the result of this new statement may be available for our review. We are hoping to have the results in advance of the zoning meeting schedule," she said. Paladino said she wants Safeguard's environmental consultant to review the statement before Williams applies for rezoning of the property at the beginning of 2002. Williams officials have repeatedly stated that they are gathering information and want to present it to the community leaders after they complete their research. Commissioner Edwards could not be reached for comment by presstime.
