Name needed for new school

A new Fayette elementary school is in need of a name.

The Fayette County School System is soliciting the help of the community in selecting a name for the school that will be on Lisbon Road. The school system has already broken ground on the school site and expects that the building will be completed sometime during the 2002-2003 school year.

To help assist with the naming of the new school, the school system has established a name selection committee. The committee will be responsible for recommending three names to the superintendent, who will then forward them to the Fayette County Board of Education.

As potential names are being brainstormed, the committee would like to hear from the community about any name ideas it might have for the new school. Recently, the board of education approved criteria for the naming of schools. Anyone wishing to submit a name should make sure their submission falls within the approved criteria.

Consideration of potential names will be given to educators who have made a significant impact to the Fayette County School System, individuals who have made a significant contribution to society, names of communities served by the school, roads, landmarks, geographical location in the proximity of the school, and former Fayette County schools no longer existing. In order to have a school named after a person, that individual must have been deceased for at least three years and have made significant social or educational contributions.

Community members wishing to submit a name for consideration should do so by Sept. 28. The submission should include justification as to why the school should carry the recommended name. Names can be submitted by mail, e-mail or in person at the Fayette County Board of Education offices.

Mailed submissions should be addressed to 210 Stonewall Ave., P.O. Box 879, Fayetteville, GA 30214. Direct submissions to Melinda Berry-Dreisbach. To e-mail a name, send submissions to berrydreisbach.melinda@fcboe.org.
