Stun gun among weapons found in student's vehicle at FCHS

A Fayette County High School student has been suspended from school for 10 days after a search of his vehicle on campus Thursday revealed several weapons.

But as of Tuesday morning, no criminal charges had been filed against the 16-year-old juvenile, according to police. Lt. Tom Kirkbride of the Fayetteville Police Department originally said the school would determine whether to press charges, but then he told The Citizen the matter "is still under investigation" by the department.

School spokesman Melinda Berry-Dreisbach said Tuesday that FCHS Principal Charles Warr was upset police hadn't filed charges against the student. The Police Department made the final determination whether to file charges, not school officials, Berry-Dreisbach said.

Kirkbride said police found a stun gun, some knives and a box cutter in the vehicle. The student's father claimed the weapons were his and the student was unaware they were in the vehicle, Kirkbride added.

The student received the standard 10-day suspension for violation of the school system's weapons policy, Berry-Dreisbach said. A disciplinary tribunal will be scheduled to hear information about the incident.
