North Fayette Baptist honors pastor with surprise tribute
By CAROLYN CARY
The office staff of the North Fayette Baptist Church had to create two church bulletins this past Sunday. One was to fool its pastor, the Rev. Dr. James G. Willis, into thinking it was worship as usual, and the other one was to keep participants in a surprise birthday celebration knowing which one of them was next on the program. Dr. Willis was recognized for his 40th year in the ministry and the 58th year of his birth. He had to have had his first clue, however, when he sat in his accustomed place behind the pulpit, and suddently realized his eight brothers and sisters were in the audience, along with his 85 year-old mother, Donie Willis. They are from the Macon area. Dr. Willis and his wife, Terry, were invited to sit on the front row, and the real worship service began. Among the accolades from members and friends were: "He's certainly not lazy, and he's the best preacher I ever had. I thank the good Lord he's been in my life." "He exhibits all the necessary qualities for the ministry, humility, faithfulness and compassion. He is faithful to his God, his family, his church, and his community. He is giving, loving and caring." "He is a blessing to this community and lives his life in such a manner that it expresses the heart of God. He is a friend, one who keeps coming toward you, when every one else is going the other way. Dr. Willis has always looked after the lost sheep in his flock."
