Plans for covered courts, clubhouse at PTC Tennis Center to proceed By JOHN
MUNFORD
Plans to add six covered tennis courts and a clubhouse/office building at the Peachtree City Tennis Center have been approved by the city's Planning Commission. The plans are part of the $2.5 million final phase of the center, which is located off Ga. Highway 54 West near the entrance to the Planterra Ridge subdivision. Tennis center director Virgil Christian said the entire project will take between six and nine months to complete. The goal is to have it ready for the annual national junior tennis tournament held Memorial Day weekend, Christian added. The 10,500 sq. ft. clubhouse building will include offices at the lower level and a pro shop and light grill upstairs. It will also have outdoor seating under a canopy, he said. Currently, the tennis center rents office space off-site and the clubhouse would have plenty of offices to meet the center's needs, Christian added. The covered courts will allow tennis to be played rain or shine. It will also allow for major college and professional tournaments to be held at the center in the future. Both the courts and clubhouse will have roofs with the same color material as the current building. The plans also include 80 new parking spaces with an additional 40 golf cart spaces and overflow parking of 54 spaces. The expansion plans were developed with the input of Planterra Ridge residents, Christian added. At their request, the plans include screening material between the subdivision and the southern border of the expansion, Christian added. The subdivision will also benefit from a cart path connection the center has agreed to build linking the subdivision with Huddleston Road. The tennis center has a waiting list for memberships, but since it is public anyone can play there, Christian said. The center is hosting its annual women's professional tournament here through Sunday.
