Students testify about substitute's alleged improprieties

Former Whitewater Middle School students testified Monday that a teenage substitute teacher tried to call up a Web site with pictures of two particular students in swimsuits for the entire class to see.

The testimony came in the State Court trial of Charlie Sheets, 18, who is charged with three counts of contributing to the deprivation of a minor. Sheets has pled not guilty, and during opening statements Monday, his attorney, Scott Ballard, alleged there is no way for the state to prove its case.

Student witnesses said when Sheets was a substitute for the class March 20, he tried to access the web site from a school field trip to Costa Rica but he was unsuccessful. The site reportedly had a photograph of two particular students who were in swimsuits, the students said.

One of the students testified that he heard Sheets make a comment about the body parts of one of the female students.

Prosecutor Steve Harris alleges that Sheets called up sexually explicit Internet sites which were shown to the entire class through a television hooked up to a computer.

Sgt. Thomas Pope, who investigated the incident, testified about how students were questioned the day after the incident using a questionnaire. He also said he reviewed the computer's hard drive to find which sites were called up that day.
