Main Street Farmers Market in search of vendors

Fresh flowers, produce and other homegrown or homemade goodies will be the order of the day Oct. 6-7 when Main Street Fayetteville and the Fayette County Extension Service kick off their first downtown Farmers' Market.

The event will be primarily on Lee Street, which will be closed off to traffic for the weekend. Other vendors may be set up around the Old Courthouse if the Lee Street space becomes too crowded.

The market is scheduled to take place Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. It will run in conjunction with the Rotary/Main Street Fall Festival at Stonewall Village.

"This will be the first of many more Main Street markets," said Nancy Price, Fayetteville's Main Street program manager. "It's something that has proven successful in many other Main Street cities across the United States, so we thought we should give it a try here in Fayetteville."

After deciding to give it a try, Price approached Sheldon Hammond with the Fayette County Extension service, and the two worked out the details of the program.

The vendor fee for space is $15 for one day or $25 for both days. Farmers and other vendors can sell directly off the backs of their trucks or put up canopies or booths.

The Main Street market is strictly for fresh produce, herbs, plants or homemade products such as jams, jellies or fresh baked breads. Craft vendors who are interested in displaying can still reserve space at the Rotary/Main Street Fall Festival across the street at Stonewall Village.

Applications for the Farmers' Market are available at both the Main Street office at City Hall, and the County Extension Service at Stonewall. For further information call Nancy Price at 770-461-6029 or Sheldon Hammond at 770-460-5730, ext. 5412.
