The Peachtree City Water and Sewage Authority will discuss its annual budget at its regular meeting Tuesday evening.

Although the meeting starts at 6:30 p.m., the authority will hold a workshop beginning at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the process of issuing bonds to pay for the upcoming $17.5 million sewer system expansion.

The $4.98 million budget represents a 1.81 percent increase from the current budget. That number might shrink as low as 1.5 percent as the budget is adjusted before the meeting, said WASA General Manager Larry Turner.

The authority discussed the budget at its meeting last month, with the main issue being a plan for increased longevity bonuses for WASA employees.

The workshop prior to the meeting will focus on the bond issue process for the expansion, which will double the capacity of the Rockaway treatment plant to 4 million gallons a day and shut down the aging Flat Creek treatment plant.

The expansion plans also call for a filtering system at the Line Creek plant to specially treat sewage so it can be piped to the Planterra Ridge Golf Course for irrigation purposes instead of being discharged into Line Creek. WASA also plans to build a new administration building which would replace the current maintenance facilities and portable administration building.

Once the project is completed, he city will end up with a treatment capacity of 6 million gallons a day, compared with the 3.9 million gallons a day it currently averages.

A.G. Edwards and Sons has been selected as the banking firm for the bond issue and Kilpatrick Stockton was chosen to represent WASA as its bond attorney.
