Eagle Scout constructs new bike racks for former school Students who ride their bicycles to Peachtree City Elementary School now have new bike racks to park and secure their vehicles. Thanks to Eagle Scout Brian Schmidt, two new wooden bike racks have replaced ones that were approximately 15 years old. Schmidt constructed and donated the racks to the school as a project to earn his Eagle rank. "Typically you have to construct something to earn the award," said Schmidt, who is now a senior at McIntosh High School. "I saw that the school was using the same bike racks that they had when I went to school there in the second grade, so I decided to construct the racks as my project." While Schmidt says constructing the racks was easy, the hard part was installing them. While trying to secure the racks in the ground, he hit rock. He says it took over nine hours to complete the installation. Although installing the racks did not go as smoothly as making them, Principal Lynda Lambeth said the school and its students appreciate Schimdt's hard work. "The kids are really enjoying the racks and are putting them to good use," said Lambeth. "We are very thankful to Brian for what he has done for the school." Schmidt said he has been involved in some type of Scouting since he was in the first grade. He enjoys Scouting because it involves helping the community through various service projects, he said. After he graduates from McIntosh in the spring, Schmidt is planning to attend either Furman University or the University of Georgia and major in international business.
