Open house this weekend at the fairgrounds By JOHN
THOMPSON
Curious residents will head to the new Coweta County Fairgrounds complex this weekend to get a glimpse at the facility. The county has extended an open invitation for everyone to visit the complex on Pine Road. The open house will go on rain or shine Sunday from 2 - 6 p.m. Scheduled entertainment includes the Newnan High School chorus, the Northgate High School 1 Act Players and the East Coweta High School band at the Walker Horne open air theater; antique automobiles, tractors and wagons in the midway area, and farm animals at the agriculture center. Clowns are scheduled to be there with balloons for the kids. Plus, there will be free hot dogs, chips, cookies and drinks for everybody and there will be folks stationed around the facility to inform you about the various venues. The new facility sits on 60 acres and features parking for up to 1,600 cars. The centerpiece of the new facility is a 14,000-sq. ft. multipurpose building that can be used by members of the community. The building will be big enough to accommodate small meetings, and county officials are hoping to lure small shows to the structure's three meeting rooms. In front of the multipurpose building will be a small amphitheater that architect Jeff Walker said could be used as a small entry stage for the fairgrounds. Walker envisions a small band or chorus greeting visitors as they walk through the ticket gates and head toward the fair's midway. The midway will sit on nine acres and be accessible through the main ticket gates in the center of the area or through a secondary set of gates. The entire 60-acre site is filled with picnic areas and will have a nature trail so residents will be encouraged to use it year-round, instead of just visiting the site for the fair. The fair will be staged at the complex Sept.18-22.
