Volunteers rebuild minigolf course

Jack Nicklaus would be envious of the new greens at Christian City's minigolf course thanks to renovations by Hope Worldwide volunteers and Christian City employees.

Volunteers gathered in May to refurbish the 9-hole course. Built more than 10 years ago with donated money and time from staff member families, the course is now in tiptop shape and was in excellent condition for the National Senior Health Day, held at the end of May.

"We decided it was time to make it more challenging," said Chris Loga, director of Life Enrichment at Christian City. "It's going to be a whole new course, almost PGA-standard," he jokingly adds.

The course, named after Bob Puckett, former CEO of Christian City, was demolished in mid-May and rebuilt with the help of Hope Worldwide, a volunteer outreach group.

"In the past, sometimes the course was full and sometimes there weren't any golfers. We hope that with this renovation that more people will take an interest in the course," said Loga.

While the course is primarily flat and handicap accessible, Christian City is trying to get putt-putt golf obstacles to enhance the course. New green carpet and new holes were installed and the border was rebuilt around the course. However, the course still needs equipment. Christian City is hoping to get new clubs and balls donated by a local organization or individual.

"The residents are already benefiting from the new course," says Loga. "They are out there almost every day. They just needed a course that looked pretty and a reason to get out in the fresh air."
