Council expected to abandon road

The abandonment of a road once meant to begin a Fayetteville bypass is one of the items on a light agenda for the City Council at Thursday night's regular meeting, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall.

Corporation Boulevard, which has been hardly mentioned for a decade, was recently in the news during deliberations leading up to the council's rejection of a rezoning request by Cobblestone Apartments and Cobblestone's ensuing lawsuit against the city.

Approximately 1.3 acres off Ga. Highway 54 east were purchased by the city in 1988 to begin development of a road that would ease traffic on the east side of town. That project never came to pass due to changing Georgia Department of Transportation priorities and other concerns.

Developers arguing for the Cobblestone rezoning said that their property had no direct access to the highway, making the commercial zoning unmarketable. When voting to deny that rezoning request, the council decided that abandoning the Corporation Boulevard tract would help alleviate that lack of access to the highway.

Also on Thursday night's agenda:

A resolution outlining an agreement for streetscape and pedestrian improvements along Church Street from Georgia Avenue to Hwy. 54.

Approval of a liquor license for Ruby Tuesday at Uptown Square, across from Fayette Pavilion (the restaurant already has a beer and wine license).

A proposed amendment to the city's impact fee ordinance.
