Christian City opposition to power plant is formalized By JOHN

Christian City officials have expressed opposition to a proposed power plant on Peters Road next to the community, and now it's official. The Williams Company must find another site for the plant, the Christian City Board of Trustees and Council of Advisors said in a resolution passed late last month. "The board is responsible for the health and well-being of all Christian City residents, which includes seniors and citizens," said Christian City CEO Bob Crutchfield. "The residents of Christian City are children, the elderly and infirm, and together they represent the most vulnerable portion of the general population," he added. "It is Christian City's position that acceptable ambient air quality, sound levels and light are critical factors in maintaining the health and well-being of these residents," he said. Crutchfield added that Christian City is in an air quality "non-attainment zone," and said any negative change in air quality could represent a threat to the health and well-being of the population. "In addition, increased ambient sound and light has a direct impact on the quality of life at Christian City, whose residents do not have the option of relocation," he said. "Because this is a health matter, this is a position from which there can be no compromise," he added. Crutchfield met with Williams officials in August. The company spent two hours visiting the facilty and officials said they would consider health implications for the residents. Williams also invited Crutchfield to visit a power plant site in Maine similar to the proposed plant for Peters Road. "Their invitation to visit a similar power plant in another state makes it appear the company still feels this site is acceptable. It's not," said Crutchfield.
