Timing is everything! By DR. KNOX HERNDON
Imagine graduating from high school in the '60s when the best rock 'n' roll ever written was being blasted on the radio and we had cool black and white TV. Now those were the days! The words "couch potato" hadn't been coined yet because you still had to get off the couch to turn on and off the TV. Imagine that! In fact there was a song on the top 10 charts entitled "Timing." It went something like this in the chorus: "cause you need timing, a-tick-a-tick-a-tick-a, good timing, a-tock-a-tock-a-tock-a good timing. It was that timing that brought you to me." Today I smile at those songs we loved to listen to and yet once in a while there was a deep message. Have you ever had a marvelous idea that for all practical purposes should be the best idea around and one that would solve great problems? Yet no matter how hard you try to get the idea off the ground, nothing seems to happen and it goes nowhere? Years ago in the early '70s I was in the entertainment business. Our band won the Battle of the Bands in Atlanta and as part of the prize for winning, we received a record contract with a company called Rink Records. We were very excited that we now had our hand on the very doorknob of success. Things were really on the move! We all went into the studio and recorded two songs, one called "Fun While it Lasted" and the flip side was a new dance called "The Frog." Don't laugh. I have heard a lot worse songs out there than what we produced, but timing is everything. Much to our total disbelief, the two partners who owned the record company got to fighting over who knows what, and they both took each other to court. All this did was lock down all the assets of the company, which of course contained our wonderful two hits. What finally happened was that the legal proceedings went on for over a year and it totally killed the momentum and the desire to recover our property. We could have continued but we didn't have the backing, assets or contacts to start with another company. In other words, timing is everything and for everything there is a season. As I look back 30-plus years later on the whole ordeal, I totally see the hand of God in the "timing" of those two men at Rink Records splitting up the assets and going to court. Had that not happened, and our record had hit the charts, who knows where any of our band members would be today? Success in God's eyes is not measured by bank statements but in heart throbs. In God's Word in Ecclesiastes chapter 3 it states: "To everything there is a season, and a time under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to pluck up that which is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to rend and a time to sew; a time to keep silent and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace." Think back over examples or circumstances in your own life where this may have been the case. I'm sure you'll find that God's timing is never late! The Rev. Dr. Knox Herndon is the pastor of His House Community Church (SBC) and a former Army chaplain. The church is just below Senoia on Ga. Highway 85, a mile south of Ga.
