Hangar area project at Falcon Field to start after air show By JOHN
MUNFORD
Construction on the new hangar area planned for Falcon Field will start soon after next weekend's Wings Over Dixie air show. The project, called "hangar area B," will host commercial operations as part of the Airport Authority's move to keep the space from being rented for private airplane storage. The authority wants to attract jet plane operators to Falcon Field since the airport makes a significant profit on its jet fuel sales. The construction is mostly funded through grants from the Federal Aviation Administration and the state Department of Transportation. The project includes the paving of taxiways, taxi lanes, airport lighting, driveways and automobile parking along with funds to bring utilities to the site. The airport authority plans to spend approximately $200,000 on the project. A pre-construction meeting on the project was held yesterday and plans are to break ground Wednesday, Sept. 12, said Airport Manager Jim Savage. The project was originally designed with space for six hangars, although some of those hangar areas could be combined for a larger commercial operation such as a repair facility if necessary. Since the authority earmarked the project for commercial tenants, it will charge a higher lease price for the area than is charged elsewhere on airport property.
