SAT scores are on the rise

Coweta's SAT scores for tests are on the upswing again.

The three Coweta County high schools showed an increase of seven points system-wide, one more than the state-wide mean score increase, for students who took the test in the 2000-2001 school year.

The biggest gainer was East Coweta High School, which showed a significant jump in its total score

The school's total average score rose 51 points to 982, compared to 931 last year.

Northgate High School's total average score dropped 21 points from 973 to 952.

Newnan High School's score dropped 11 points from 1016 to 1005.

System-wide, the Coweta average total score was 981, up from 974 last year, with an average verbal score of 492, up from 491 last year, and an average math score of 489, up from 483 last year.

The SAT 1, also known by its previous name, the Scholastic Aptitude Test is designed specifically for students who have been enrolled in traditional college preparatory classes and plan to attend a four-year college or university.

John Dunn, director of middle and high school curriculum for the Coweta County School System, has begun analyzing the scores. He said the SAT 1 testing company, Educational Testing Services, will release sub-parts of the tests by October, allowing for greater analysis.

"We just have the bare numbers now," said Dunn.

East Coweta High School administered the test to 137 students during the 2000-2001 school year, down from 193 test-takers last year.

Northgate High School administered the test to 150 students, up from 97 the year before, and Newnan High School administered the test to 169 students up from 177 last year.

Students may take the test multiple times. Dunn said that the testing service reports students' scores as the average of the highest score achieved on the math and verbal portions of the test. He also said that students' total scores rise an average of about 80 points between a first and second taking of the test.

The Coweta County School System also offers SAT 1 test preparatory classes six times a year, coinciding with the test's administration.

High schools are currently signing up for the next such test prep class, which begins Sept. 18. Cost for registration is $60, or $35 if either the math or verbal test prep classes are taken individually.
