AAA shares traffic safety tips

AAA Auto Club South is reminding motorists to remember the basics of auto safety in its "School's Open Drive Carefully" campaign.

To help protect children, AAA suggests following these safety tips:

Slow down in or near school and residential areas;

Drive with your headlights on, even during the day, so children and other drivers can see you;

Scan between parked cars and other objects for signs of children who may dart into the road;

Look for clues such as bicycles and playgrounds that indicate children may be in the area, and

Use extra caution in bad weather.

"The key is to expect the unexpected," said Yoli Buss, director of traffic safety at AAA Auto Club South. "There could be children walking or biking to school right behind you as you back out of your driveway. ... If you anticipate that a child may cross the street in front of you to chase a ball or run after a friend, you won't be taken by surprise and will be able to stop in time."

The campaign also is designed to warn drivers to remember that children have difficulty judging traffic situations because their peripheral vision is narrower than that of adults. Children also make the mistake of assuming that if they can see a car, the driver can see them but motorists may have a difficult time seeing children because of their small stature.
