Youth earns Eagle rank

Brandon Lee Thompson recently was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a special Court of Honor at First Baptist Church of Peachtree City.

This award isthe culmination of a scouting career which began for Thompson in the first grade when he joined Tiger Cubs. He progressed through Cub Scouts, Webelos Scouts and Boy Scouts during his association with the Boy Scouts of America, which spanned 11 of his 17 years as a Fayette County resident.

Troop 209, chartered by St. Andrew's-in-the-Pines Episcopal Church, conducted the Court of Honor. The troop is known for having more boys attain Eagle rank than the national average.

In his time in Scouting Thompson helped with many civic projects, including Scouting for Food, Scouting for Toys, service projects cleaning up parks, and working on his own Eagle project as well as the Eagle projects of his fellow Scouts. Thompson's project was a prayer garden, with stepping stones and extensive landscaping, at his home church of First Baptist in Peachtree City.

Taking advantage of his training and experience in Scouting, Thompson and a friend traveled in 2000 to Spain and France to hike the Pyrannes mountains. He had previously been on a 10-day hiking trip at the Boy Scout facility in Philmont, N.M., as well as troop hikes throughout Georgia.

Thompson took part in the 1996 National Boy Scout Jamboree. He enjoyed Camp Thunder (the local council camp) and the Over and Under Program of the Lawhorn Canoe Base, part of Thunder Reservation. He went in caves, canoed whitewater rivers, fished, camped, hiked and sailed in many venues organized by the local Boy Scouts.
