Collins drops in on Fayette

From Staff Reports

U.S. Rep. Mac Collins spent some time in Fayette County Monday, visiting with Sheriff Randall Johnson and Superior Court Clerk Sheila Studdard, talking education with faculty at J.C. Booth Middle School, and explaning government to students at the school.

There was no shortage of questions during the one-hour session with about 100 students in attendance. Students asked Collins everything from how often he rides in limousines to his stance on gun control, and the questions kept coming even after teachers had called "time."

He said he hardly ever rides in limousines.

One student's query about Collins' farming background he never farmed or owned a farm early in life, but recently bought a farm with a few cows seemed to please the crowd. "I like cows ... cows are good," opined one youngster.

During the visit with Johnson and Studdard, he weighed in on the state Legislature's redistricting process, characterizing the redistricting plan approved last week as "legally right but morally wrong."

He also said he wasn't sure if the U.S. Department of Justice would approve the redistricting maps passed through the state Legislature.

Collins represents several south metro and west Georgia counties, including Fayette.
