Schools get access to anti-tobacco videos CARING, the Coalition Advocating Responsible Indoor Non-Smoking Generations, has presented the Fayette County School System with videos entitled Secrets Through the Smoke developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CARING donated enough videos for every middle and high school in the district. Health, English or social studies teachers can use the program, which comes with a flexible teaching guide. The video can be used in a variety of ways to fit into lesson plans that address marketing issues, advertising gimmicks, health facts and the due process of litigation surrounding the use of tobacco. "The Fayette County School System is very appreciative to CARING for these videos," said Larry Reeves, director of pupil personnel services for the school system. "It is important that we provide our students with the most up-to-date information concerning health issues. These videos will be very valuable in our high and middle schools as we present factual information concerning this timely topic." Jill Holmes Long, vice chairman of CARING, presented the videotapes to the board of education during its regular meeting recently. "CARING is happy to be working in conjunction with the school district to assist in materials compatible with the established curriculum and practices of the district," said Long. "Our students need accurate and timely information regarding the nature of tobacco, nicotine addiction, related illnesses and the effects of advertising in their lives. "This video will assist teachers with data concerning tobacco issues as well as up-to-date information surrounding the tobacco settlement monies," she added.
