Masked gunman comes up empty at gas station Sunday night

A masked gunman aborted an armed robbery attempt at a local convenience store Sunday evening.

The Chevron store on Ga. Highway 92 North had been closed for the evening when the incident occurred after 10:20 p.m., said Maj. Bruce Jordan of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department. The suspect, a black male, came forward as the clerk exited the store, Jordan said.

The suspect, who concealed his identity with a ski mask, forced the clerk back inside and demanded cash, Jordan said. The clerk attempted to unlock the door to a back office, but the suspect ran off before the door was opened, Jordan said.

"Apparently, the robber got scared when it took so long to open the back office," Jordan said.

The suspect, who had a silver handgun, approached the store on foot although he likely had a vehicle parked nearby. Authorities do not have a description of a vehicle used by the suspect, Jordan said.

The incident is still under investigation by the Sheriff's Department, Jordan said. The incident was not caught on the store's video surveillance system, he added.

The assailant didn't leave any items behind that could lead to his identity, Jordan noted.

"That's all we have so far," Jordan said.

No one was hurt during the incident, Jordan added.
