Braelinn Baptist Church's efforts to build a new sanctuary in Tyrone will have a first test Thursday night.

The Tyrone Planning Commission is conducting a public hearing on changing the zoning category of a tract at Ga. Highway 74 and Dogwood Trail from Agricultural Residential to Educational Institutional.

Town manager Barry Amos said Braelinn officials have not yet submitted formal plans to the city, but he expects to get more specifics from church officials Thursday night.

Peachtree City is looking to acquire the current Braelinn Baptist Church campus for use as a community center. The facility has 18 classrooms and a multipurpose auditorium that can seat up to 600 people. The purchase would cost Peachtree City $2.6 million and is part of a bond referendum that will go before the voters in November.

Additionally, the Planning Commission will:

Discuss an annexation request by J.L. Jennings. Jennings wants to annex his 32.41 acre site on Trickum Creek Road into the town. Amos said the site is bordered on two sides by the town, and sits directly behind the new John Wieland Southampton subdivision.

Jennings has not specified how he wants to develop the tract.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at Tyrone Town Hall.
