Power plant protesters plan party

Safeguard South Metro will host a letter writing party Saturday from 4 - 8 p.m. at Atlanta City Church on Old Jonesboro Road in Fairburn.

Safeguard is a community group spearheading efforts to stop construction of one of the largest power plants in the United States next to Christian City on the Fayette County border.

The Williams Company is proposing to locate the 1,230-megawatt power plant, Fulton Energy Center, on 288 acres between Peters Road and Old Jonesboro Road. Residents are concerned that the center will have four 210-foot stacks that will emit approximately 500 tons or one million pounds of nitrogen oxide into the atmosphere, and say the pollution will be harmful to their health.

The plant will use approximately seven million gallons of water a day. The plant will initially have a footprint of 30 - 35 acres and, according to Williams Company representatives, may be expanded in the future.

The purpose of the party Saturday is to assist and encourage residents to voice their concerns to elected officials in Union City, Fulton County and Fayette County regarding the power plant. All the supplies, including postage, will be provided by Safeguard.
