Fulton growth slight in 2001, but region takes off

Fulton County's population has grown slightly in the past year, according to Atlanta Regional Commission estimates.

The ARC Board Thursday approved the new estimates, revealing the second largest population increase in the region's history.

While Fulton grew only 1.5 percent since the 2000 Census, from 816,006 to 828,100, the 10-county Atlanta region added 101,162 people, growing to 3,531,000 persons.

The largest increase was 105,500, from 1994 to 1995.

"This unpreceddented period of rapid, steady population growth is a result of a strong regional economy and a high uality of life," said Bart Lewis, chief of ARC's Research Division.

Henry County led the region with an 8.2 percent growth.
