Donated school site in West Village still being tweaked By JOHN MUNFORD
The details are still being ironed out on a proposal from John Wieland Homes to donate land to the Fayette County Board of Education for a future elementary school. The plan is part of the annexation proposal brought forth by Wieland, which wants the city to annex 80 acres which will be part of its 350-home Centennial subdivision. The land is located at the northern end of the city limits on the new MacDuff Parkway. Mike Satterfield, the facilities director for the school system, told the City Council last week that the school needs the site to be about 18 acres. That means the fire station site, which Wieland was planning to donate to the city, could be moved elsewhere. The school site is on the western side of MacDuff Parkway adjacent to the Wynnmeade subdivision. An access road which had been located north of the school site will be moved south to give the school site more land; the road will link MacDuff Parkway to a planned 107-home subdivision that will be built north of Wynnmeade. The extra space is needed to make sure the bus loop and entrance areas aren't cramped and also to insure there is enough space for playgrounds, Satterfield said. Another problem that will need to be addressed is the site's elevation, Satterfield said. The site is about 15 feet lower than MacDuff Parkway, he said. Assuming these and other small issues can be worked out, the board will begin its study of the property before it decides whether or not to accept the site, Satterfield said.
