Youth Commission taking applications

Applications are being accepted from Fulton County and Atlanta students for the 2001-2002 Fulton County Youth Commission.

The deadline to apply is Monday, Sept. 10.

Any public or private high school student, ages 14 to 17 and in the ninth through 11th grades, can apply for membership in the 15-member group, which advises the Board of Commissioners about youth issues.

For the new school year, the youth commissioners will develop a countywide legislative agenda to address issues that may include homelessness, teen prostitution, drug use, disabilities and sexually transmitted diseases.

See high school counselors for forms and information, or call the Fulton County Human Service Department at 404-730-7944. Applicants must excel in an oral presentation on youth issues, and pass a final interview.

Since its founding three years ago by Commissioner Nancy A. Boxill, the Youth Commission has participated in the Georgia General Assembly Children's Agenda Day, helped lead March of Dimes WalkAmerica, distributed school supplies and summer safety kits to children, and sponsored the Power of Youth Millennium Celebration in downtown Atlanta.
