Public invited to explore one of the region's largest general aviation sites

Families can get a close look at some of the aircraft that fly into and out of Fulton County Airport-Brown Field on "Aviation Day," 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 25.

Sponsored by Fulton County Commission Chairman Mike Kenn, Aviation Day is designed to let the public become more familiar with operations at the county-managed airport, west of Atlanta on Fulton Industrial Boulevard north of I-20. Admission is free.

On view will be several twin-engine turboprop and jet aircraft, fire trucks and informational displays of eight county departments. Members of the Fulton Industrial Boulevard Association will conduct a mini-job fair and read aviation-related stories to children in a "Flights of Fancy" story time.

Visitors are urged to donate similar books in a collection barrel at this event.

Named in part for a former county commissioner who was instrumental in acquiring the site in the late 1940s, the 900-acre airport generates fees by serving as a base for several government agencies and corporate flight operations.

It is one of the largest general aviation airports in the region, accommodating aircraft of visiting celebrities and private individuals.

Future plans at Fulton County Airport-Brown Field call for a privately funded Tuskegee Airman's museum and aviation career training facility to be built on vacant land.
