Fairburn residents looking for hot tea and a light lunch may have a few more options, thanks to the City Council.

The council approved an ordinance Monday night that would allow tea rooms near residential areas.

City Administrator Tony Cox said there has been interest in recent years by business folks who wanted to open a tea room in the city.

Cox said the ordinance approved Monday night tries to take in concerns from residents and business people.

Highlights of the ordinance include:

  • Seating will be limited to 24 people.
  • There must be a 15-foot landscaped buffer between a tea room and a residence.
  • There can be no more than 12 parking spaces.
  • Hours of service are limited from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • No alcoholic beverages are allowed.

Cox said there is one person contemplating opening a tea room in town.

"I'm not convinced it's going to fly in Fairburn with this ordinance," he said.
