Sewer authority approves funds to design expansion projects

The ball is rolling for Peachtree City's planned $17.5 million sewer expansion.

The Water and Sewer Authority has contracted with Arcadis G&M Inc. for designing plans for the expansion of the Rockaway waste water treatment plant. Arcadis will also design the urban reuse facility, which will pump specially-treated wastewater to the Planterra Ridge golf course to be used for irrigation.

Arcadis will not design the administrative building, however, said WASA General Manager Larry Turner. Instead, having a local firm do the design-build process for the new administration building should save the authority some money, Turner said.

It will also speed up construction of the administrative building, Turner added. Construction is expected to take six months.

"It should literally be ready by the time the plant expansion starts," Turner said.

For designing and overseeing construction of the projects, Arcadis will receive $740,000, not including additional services which could be rendered that aren't under the scope of the project, Turner said.

The expansion of the Rockaway plant will increase its treatment capacity by two million gallons a day.

The authority also selected an investment banking firm and bond counsel for the planned bond issue to fund the expansion projects. A.G. Edwards and Sons was selected as the banking firm and Kilpatrick Stockton was chosen as the bond attorney.

Both are being used by the City Council which will propose several bond projects before voters in November.

The authority's bond issue, however, does not need to be approved by voters.

The authority also authorized spending money for the expansion projects from its current funds which will be reimbursed after the bonds are issued.
