County wants to clear up confusion over authorities

Coweta County wants to do something about eliminating the confusion surrounding its development authorities.

The county is one of the few in the state that has authorities that have the power to sell bonds and attract industry to the county.

During Tuesday's County Commission meeting, Commissioner Vernon "Mutt" Hunter suggested the county merge the two boards into one.

"They both have the same budget. I want the five-member board done away with," Hunter said.

Hunter said before development authorities were established by the state, Coweta and Muscogee counties created their own development authorities.

Then, the state stepped in and Coweta found itself with the Development Authority of Coweta County and the Coweta County Development Authority.

The two boards have the same power, but one board has seven members and one has five. All five of the members serve on the seven-member board, so Hunter wants to see the five-member board folded into the bigger board.

Hunter asked County Attorney Mitch Powell to look into the legal ramifications of combining the boards, since both groups have issued bonds in the past.

"I bet more than 75 percent of the people in the county don't understand why we have two boards," Hunter said.
