Commissioner denies conflict of interest in power plant voting By JOHN
THOMPSON
Coweta County Commissioner Jim McGuffey is denying any conflict of interest during the fight over the building of a power plant in neighboring Heard County. McGuffey's company, Shenandoah Electric, bid on providing electrical contracting services for the Dynegy plant that is currently operating in Heard County. But McGuffey said it's ridiculous to charge him with conflict of interest since Coweta County did not have any jurisdiction over the plant. He has also consistently voiced his opposition to the plant and said he actually didn't know the bid was being done, since his son is the operations manager for Shenandoah Electric. "He didn't have any actual dealings with Dynegy; he was dealing with a general contractor," he said. But Birmingham attorney Christian Glenos, who is representing a group of subcontractors suing over the project, said McGuffey started opposing the project when the political war started over the building of the facility. "It doesn't make any sense to charge me with conflict of interest when I voted against the project and never supported it," said McGuffey.
