Student writers honored in state publication

The next Mark Twain or Maya Angelou could be a student within the Fayette County School System.

The Georgia Council of Teachers of English has recognized five Fayette students as being experts in writing.

Each year teachers who are members of the GCTE have an opportunity to select a maximum of four writing samples from their students for possible inclusion in the organization's annual publication, Mindscapes. Teachers from throughout the state submit pieces. An editorial board charged with selecting the best pieces for publication evaluates the writings, which are either poetry or short stories.

This year, one elementary and four middle school students from Fayette were included in the publication, which is distributed to all GCTE members. The following students' works were published in the 2001 edition of Mindscapes:

Jordan Green; fourth grade; Burch Elementary; short story, "The Story Behind the Meal";

Andrew Demmitt; eighth grade; Rising Starr Middle; short story, "You Break It";

Brian Ingram; eighth grade; Rising Starr Middle; short story, "A Better Place";

Matt Cookson; eighth grade; Rising Starr Middle; poetry, "The Night the World Pained";

Stephanie Ford; eighth grade; Rising Starr Middle; short story, "Lilies of the Valley".

Gifted program coordinator Ann Richardson says competitions of this type provide valuable opportunities to young writers.

"The power of this kind of competition is that it provides a real audience for the student to present his or her writings. Parents and teachers are not real audiences because students write for us all of the time. These opportunities provide a chance for students to reach the eyes, ears and hearts of others who are not familiar with them or their work," Richardson said.

In addition to having their work published and distributed to people throughout the state, winning students were also presented a certificate recognizing them as experts in writing.
