Five undercover officers for the Fayette County Sheriff's Department and a Tyrone police officer have been awarded medals of valor for their work in large drug busts in DeKalb and Clayton Counties in June.

The investigations leading to both operations began in Fayette County, said Maj. Bruce Jordan, director of investigations for the sheriff's department, who was also awarded with a medal for his work on the cases. Along with the medal, the officers received a red and white pin to wear on their uniform signifying the high honor.

The busts led to the confiscation of drugs with a street value of over $3 million.

Jordan said the officers on the case put in a lot of hard work to make things happen smoothly. Officers from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration also took part in the operations.

In the DeKalb bust, a large quantity of cocaine was seized as it was being unloaded from a tractor trailer at a rock quarry. Only one of the suspects at the scene got away while five others were arrested. Authorities also took in $330,000 in cash, part of which will be diverted to Fayette County and Tyrone, which participates in the drug task force with the county.

The Clayton bust, which came days later, involved over 1,300 pounds of marijuana with an estimated street value of almost $1 million.
