Peachtree City resident Murray J. Weed has announced his candidacy for the Post 4 City Council seat currently held by Carol Fritz.

Weed, 35, is an attorney with Fincher and Hecht of Morrow who specializes in municipal law. He is the third candidate to publicly announce intentions to run for office in November, including mayoral candidates Steve Brown and Fred Wellman.

Although qualifying for the mayor's post and two council seats up for grabs doesn't begin until Sept. 10, Weed said he wanted to clear up the various rumors he had heard about his candidacy.

"My family and I are very excited about the upcoming election and are looking forward to running a good campaign," Weed said. "There are a number of important issues that the incoming City Council will be facing; perhaps the most important of these issues will be budgetary commitments and fiscal control."

The new council must also plan long-term responses to the impact of current growth, Weed added.

Weed was a finalist interviewed by council during the selection process to fill the seat vacated by Robert Brooks in February. Council, however, selected another finalist, Steve Rapson, who is a former finance director for the city.

Weed served four years as the in-house county attorney for Lowndes County before moving to Peachtree City. In that capacity, Weed directed the code enforcement department and graduated from police academy

Weed has also served as the chief prosecutor for drug condemnation and juvenile court for the city of Columbus and as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve.

Locally, Weed has been active as the general counsel for the Fayette Young Republicans, vice chairman of the All Children's Playground Committee and the Peachtree City Rotary Club where he is the Interact club sponsor for McIntosh High School. He is also involved with First Presbyterian Church of Peachtree City.

Weed and his wife, LeAnn, have a son, Logan.
