Fairburn eyes GRTA standards

Fairburn City Administrator Tony Cox is urging the City Council to take a close look at performance measures recently approved by the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority.

Cox passed out the GRTA guidelines at the last council meeting and said it's now becoming clear that the transportation superagency is focusing on high-density developments.

"You need to see if this is the type of development you want," Cox told the council.

GRTA adopted 16 performance measures to evaluate how effective it is in solving the region's transportation problems. Eleven of the measures deal with mass transit issues.

Some of the guidelines include:

Percentage of population with one-quarter mile of a bus route.

Percentage of population within one-half mile of a rail stop.

Total transit ridership.

Number of miles of designated bicycle facilities.

"Adopting these measures is a positive step for GRTA," said GRTA Executive Director Catherine Ross. "We now have a valid baseline against which we can judge the success of our efforts."

Cox asked the City Council to evaluate GRTA's standards and possibly respond back to the agency.
