Nettie Knight dead at 104

Since Nettie Knight turned 100 four years ago, she has been a regular part of the Prime Timer pages. Unfortunately, this smiling lady passed away last week at the age of 104.

Ms. Nettie was a spry, witty lady who always had a quick quip she often followed with her shy smile. She was generous in spirit and quickly became a favorite to all who got to know her.

She participated in all the fun activities at Southland, riding in her decorated wheelchair during the July 4th parade, going shopping and enjoying many other special events.

She loved having her picture in the paper and we at the Citizen attempted to oblige her as often as we could.

Celebrating her birthday each year was possibly the event she enjoyed the most. Each year the staff at Southland Nursing Home and her friends tried to find a new way to top the previous year's production.

She talked on the radio, received a bouquet of balloons to match her years, and this year received 104 roses to mark the occasion. Opening a table of presents merited many thank-you's and may have ranked a close second to having her picture in the paper.

Ms. Nettie entered the Ms. Southland Pageant each year and was the runner-up this year. Although she never received the crown she coveted at the pageant, she was always a winner in the hearts and minds of the judges and all who knew her.
