Firemen come to aid of puppies stranded along Highway 314 By JOHN
MUNFORD
Four puppies discovered at the side of Ga. Highway 314 north during rush hour Friday morning were saved by two Fayette County firefighters. A woman dropped by station one as Billy Martin and Richard Rumbaugh were starting their shift, asking if they could rescue the stranded pups. After dashing across the road, the pair was able to rein in two of the pups. The other two took a little more wrangling, though. The pair suited up in their bright yellow turn gear (so they'd be seen by oncoming motorists) and set off into the mud and the muck. Before too long, the last two pups were caught and brought back to the fire station, placed inside the fence and given water. "They were as frightened as can be ... shivering with fear," Martin said. Even before the dogs were picked up by the animal shelter, calls were being made to all the other fire stations to find a home for the pups. Martin said the good deed was a wonderful way to start the work day. "Thank God that lady stopped by and asked if we could help," he said, guessing that the pups wouldn't have lasted long with cars speeding by at 60 or more miles an hour." The pups, which Martin guessed were a labrador mix, were "very cute," he said. They were large enough to be adopted, Martin said. "We just want to make sure they get a good home," he said.
