Booth entrance to get makeover

Traffic jams at Booth Middle School will likely be much smoother this year.

In years past, the onslaught of parents picking up and dropping off students has forced motorists to line up on Peachtree Parkway. But school officials are proceeding with plans to expand the parking lot, widen the entrance and create a second entrance for buses only.

Work is already underway for the project, which was approved by the Peachtree City Planning Commission Monday night.

The parking lot expansion will add 25 new spaces and several landscaped islands. But it will also serve as a path where vehicles can line up as parents drop off and pick up students, said Mike Satterfield, facilities director for the Fayette County Board of Education.

A new sidewalk will be built adjacent to the parking lot so students don't have to be let out at the front door of the school, Satterfield noted.

The new bus entrance will be located off Peachtree Parkway south of the main entrance, although it will be gated so other vehicles can't use it after school, Satterfield said.

"It will help keep the cars and buses separate," Satterfield said. The new bus entrance will also provide another route for emergency vehicles to enter the campus if necessary, he noted.

The project also includes the widening of the school entrance to provide two entrance lanes and two exit lanes.
