Board member selected as state school board treasurer Coweta County Board of Education member D. Smith Pass was elected June 22 to serve as the Georgia School Board Association's treasurer, a three-year term. Pass was elected for the post at the GSBA's Summer Conference and Delegate Assembly in Savannah July 20 - 23. More than 600 school board members, superintendents and other educational leaders from around the state met for the annual assembly. All seven Coweta County school board members attended this year's conference, and member Bill Covington served as a voting delegate at the assembly. Coweta board member Marihope Shirey Troutman nominated Pass for the post earlier in the year, and Pass interviewed with GSBA's nominating committee in February. The post of GSBA treasurer requires the officer to serve as a steward of the association's funds and financial records. Pass's duties will include serving on the association's executive committee, conducting an annual examination of association records, assisting in the preparation of an annual budget, and presenting a financial report to the Board of Directors and the Delegate Assembly. "I'm looking forward to serving on the executive committee, because they make decisions that affect all the school board's in Georgia," said Pass. "GSBA is an invaluable resource for school board members." The new post will also mean monthly GSBA meetings for Pass. Her first will be in July. Pass said she looks forward to her service on the executive committee, and has a few pet projects she would like to focus on. "Personally, I hope that we can continue our technology initiative most of all, so we can expand distance learning opportunities in the rest of the state," said Pass. Pass has served on the Coweta County Board of Education since 1995. She chaired the School Climate Committee on the Governor's Education Reform Study Commission in 1999, and the commission's Personnel Committee in 2000. Pass is a member of the Board of Directors of the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education, and has served on the Georgia School Board Association's Federal Relations Network.
