Busy highway probably won't be widened until 2010

Coweta commuters learned Tuesday night that the four-laning of Ga. Highway 34 from Thomas Crossroads to Peachtree City is probably not going to occur until 2010.

Nearly 40 people gathered at State Sen. Mitch Seabaugh's Coweta office to listen to representatives from the state Department of Transportation discuss Coweta's traffic problems.

After the meeting, Seabaugh proclaimed the meeting a success.

"I think the DOT people now know the residents' concerns about traffic problems," he said.

The overwhelming number of questions concerned Hwy. 34, but Seabaugh said residents also had concerns about Ga. Highway 54 and Ga. Highway 154.

"They want something done about 154," he said.

Seabaugh would also like to see all the traffic lights synchronized from Peachtree City to Newnan and said a traffic light going up at Hwy. 154 and Raymond Hill Road should provide some relief for residents who commute in the northern part of the county.

Besides wanting Hwy. 34 four-laned all the way to Peachtree City, many residents complained about the lack of turning lanes on the highway and asked DOT officials to examine the situation to make traffic flow better.

Seabaugh said there are plans to add a turn lane on U.S. Highway 29 in Madras near the middle school to help traffic flow in that area.

Next week, Seabaugh is traveling to DOT headquarters to discuss the traffic meetings he staged this week in Coweta and Fayette counties. He hopes that officials will be more moved to deal with some of the projects after listening to the residents' complaints.
